North American area code 254 is a state of Texas telephone area code for numbers in the Waco area. It was created May 25, 1997, in a split from area code 817.

By coincidence, “254″ also happens to be a reference to the number of counties Texas has, the most of any state (see list of counties in Texas). A well known rap song called “Welcome to The 254″ refers to this area code, a point of pride among the area’s residents.
